The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has warned that the UK is in the midst of a major healthcare crisis as months-long cancer treatment delays become increasingly common, leading to higher mortality.
On December 14, a number of British media cited recent NHS figures showing that nearly 40% of cancer patients, who were urgently referred by their family doctors to specialized treatment facilities in October, had to wait an additional two months before receiving treatment.
According to doctors, delaying of just 4 weeks in cancer treatment increases mortality by 6% to 13% for solid tumors, and this rate increases further if delayed. Meanwhile, according to an article published in the journal Lancet Oncology, the UK cancer death rate has increased by 17% due to delays in diagnosis and treatment since the Covid-19 pandemic. This is believed to have contributed significantly to the disruption of cancer treatments in the country.
Clinicians from Imperial College London, the Institute of Cancer Policy at King's College, Radiotherapy UK and Check4Cancer have called for immediate action to tackle the medical crisis.
