South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom is planning to launch a flying taxi service in 2025, hoping to generate significant revenue in the future.

The South Korean company is looking to expand its business beyond its traditional mobile service provider and target new areas such as artificial intelligence and flying taxis. These planes will require connectivity to a next-generation 5G network to operate and fly, eventually autonomously, where SK Telecom's expertise comes into play.

Last year, SK Telecom and the US company Joby Aviation signed a cooperation agreement to develop air taxis for the Korean market. Joby Aviation is a manufacturer of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, which is believed to become the most advanced transportation option to avoid traffic jams. Together, the two companies are looking to leverage government support to develop new forms of transportation.

According to consulting firm Roland Berger, it is estimated that there will be nearly 160,000 electric drones in use worldwide by 2050, generating nearly $90 billion in annual revenue. Realizing the potential from a "fat" piece of cake, SK Telecom is hoping to become a pioneer and win a big piece of the pie. According to Ha Min-yong, if all goes well, air taxis could be a big source of revenue for the company, but not right now.

The Korean government is stepping up efforts to commercialize air taxis by 2025. SK Telecom and Joby Aviation are looking to comply with the government's regulations, safety standards, and certification requirements.

The partnership aims to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as 5G networks, autonomous driving, and artificial intelligence to create a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

The successful development and launch of air taxis in South Korea is expected to revolutionize the way people travel and significantly impact various industries such as transportation, logistics, tourism, and more. With a robust infrastructure and a supportive government, SK Telecom and Joby Aviation are on track to make this futuristic vision a reality.
