On November 18, Japan Airlines operated the first zero-emissions flight in the country with using sustainable aviation fuel or SAF.

The zero-emissions flight comes as the global aviation industry faces pressure to reduce its environmental impact.

The aircraft took off from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Naha.

SAF accounts for 40% of the fuel used for Japan Airlines flights.  This sustainable fuel is produced mainly from waste oil and is said to cut CO2 emissions by around 80%.

Japan Airlines plans to start using sustainable aviation fuel in flights by 2024 and aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 through the use of SAF and other measures.

This airline said that the flight's CO2 emissions were zero due to the use of fuel-efficient aircraft and an emission trading application.

JAL is planning to start using SAF in regular flights by 2024. Its competitor All Nippon Airways has been using the fuel since 2020.
