Hong Kong could ‘import’ up to 7,000 Nurses next year

The Hong Kong government said on December 15 that the region could import up to 7,000 nurses for positions at Hong Kong's nursing homes to care for the elderly.
This vision is part of a plan to quickly alleviate the severe nursing shortage in the region. The plan could be rolled out in the middle of next year.
Under an initiative approved by Hong Kong's leadership earlier last week, all care centers, including those subsidized by the government, will be able to register "importing" nurses as foreigners, instead of the current regulation that only allows private institutions to do this.
The new plan received support from the executive board of nursing homes, but also received many objections. Opponents of the plan argue that the shortage of manpower should be addressed by raising wages for those working in the industry.
According to estimates by the Labor and Welfare Authority, the industry had a shortfall of about 1,600 employees last year. The bureau also estimates that it will need 4,500 more carers by 2025-2026 to meet the new demand for services and the higher staffing requirements under the proposed law to upgrade services.
The region's Labor and Welfare Authority said that even with a special labor import plan, the industry would still have about 1,500 positions missing.
