The price of small rough diamonds for rings has increased by nearly 20% since the beginning of March. The increase is the result of US sanctions against Russian mining company Alrosa which accounts for a third of global diamond production. Without Alrosa’s participating in the market, diamond cutters, polishers and traders are all having difficulty sourcing gems.

Auction house Christie's said that the diamond "The Rock" weighs 228.31 carats, is pear-shaped and was found in South Africa more than 20 years ago.  This is the biggest white diamond ever to be sold at auction.
