Europe wants fashion to work in a circular circle: everything has to be recycled. By 2030, Europe plans to end fast fashion, only allowing clothes from recycled fibres.

According to the European Commission, each year about 5.8 million tons of textiles, equivalent to 11 kg/person, are thrown away in the European Union (EU) countries.  Every second, the equivalent of a truckload of clothing is buried or burned somewhere in the world.  In the years 1995-2020, the number of clothes purchased doubled, but the quality and life expectancy decreased by 36%.

Clothing entering EU must be Sustainable and Recyclable by 2030

The global fashion industry currently operates on a straight-line system: make, buy, wear, quick throw away.  In which, the amount of recycled clothing accounts for less than 1%.  About 87% of it is buried or burned outside the landfill.

In 2022, the European Commission adopted a joint strategy on sustainability and recyclable apparel.  The goal of the strategy is that by 2030, clothing entering the EU market must be sustainable and recyclable.

The majority of clothing must be made from recycled fibers, contain no harmful substances and be produced on the principle of respecting the environment and the rights of workers.  This joint strategy aims to help consumers enjoy high-quality, easy-to-repair, affordable clothing products for a long time, while increasing the popularity of clothing repair services as well as recycling activities.

Clothing manufacturers are responsible for their products throughout the value chain, even after they have become scrap.  The EU expects that the textile industry here will thrive, have enough capacity to recycle and minimize the burning and landfilling of clothes.  Accordingly, the EU proposes EPR ('extended producer responsibility' programs to support the costs of collection and recycling of textiles.

EU countries will be able to launch initiatives such as a 'product passport' in the form of encrypted information to trace the manufacturing process of the garment transparently.

WHAT ARE THE BEST DESIGNER BAGS TO INVEST IN 2022?

Since the outbreak of the epidemic in 2020, luxury handbags have been seen as a profitable investment.  Unlike the old days, buying and selling second hand goods is a hot trend pursued by fashion lovers which is considered a measure to protect the environment and promote the sustainable development of the fashion industry.

However, not every luxury bag model increases in price in the resale market.  Only some handbags have potential and are not always purchasable.  The resale price also depends on the newness, rare materials, and age of the bag.  Currently, Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags, Chanel 2.55 and 11.12 bags, Louis Vuitton Capucines and Neverfull bags are considered the most valuable investments regardless of the annual fashion season.
