11 Scientific methods to Slow down Aging process and Increase Longevity
Aging is no longer a concern of only women, but has become a concern of everyone. Some people try everything to slow down this natural process. If you are one of them, you can feel safe now. Scientists have studied and found a number of methods that can help us prolong young and slow down the aging process.
Aging is no longer a concern of only women, but has become a concern of everyone. Some people try everything to slow down this natural process. If you are one of them, you can feel safe now. Scientists have studied and found a number of methods that can help us prolong young and slow down the aging process.
Here are ways to slow down the aging process with the help of modern science and technology.
1- Remove aging cells
A team of scientists from the Mayo Clinic, USA, conducted studies in mice to find out the effects of anti-aging drugs (also called longevity therapies or senolytics). They found that the drug eliminated aging cells, was able to prevent cell damage, restore physical function and prolong the lives of aged mice.
Meanwhile, Unity Biotechnology, USA, launched the first human clinical trials to test this anti-aging therapy. Their goal is to cure knee arthritis, a disease closely linked with cellular aging in the joints.
2- Gene mutation
Have you ever wondered why some mammals live so long? Researchers from the UK and Spain have been trying to find an answer to this question. They linked specific genomes to those of long-lived primates using bioinformatics. It is a field of science that uses the technologies of applied mathematics, informatics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, chemistry, and biochemistry to solve biological problems.
They discovered 25 genetic mutations that are involved in wound healing, blood clotting and cardiovascular treatment. Now, they are using these results to study aging in humans.
3- Biomarkers of aging
A biomarker is an indicator that measures the severity or presence of certain disease states. Biomarkers can be as simple as chemicals, like glucose as a marker for diabetes, or a gene or DNA marker as a marker for genetic diseases.
Steve Horvath, a bioinformatics expert, worked to generate reliable features of biological age. Horvath and a team of researchers developed a new biomarker of aging they called DNAm PhenoAge. It is much better than previous biomarkers and can predict various outcomes of aging, including mortality from cancer or Alzheimer's.
4- Stem cell therapy against cancer and diabetes
The researchers were able to store certain stem cells and were able to stimulate these cells to develop into appropriate organs. Stem cells are stored under low temperature conditions. When needed, these cells will be used to regenerate cells and tissues.
One of the startup launched in 2018 was involved in the development of this type of therapy using placental stem cells to treat diseases such as cancer, Crohn's disease, diabetes.
5- Soften wrinkles in the cell nucleus
As we age, we usually only care about the wrinkles on our faces. However, there is a problem that needs more attention than that is wrinkles in the cell nucleus.
In 2018, researchers from the University of Virginia, USA, found that most aging agents, such as fatty liver disease, can be the result of the appearance of wrinkles in the cell nucleus, causing the nucleus to become curved and wrinkled. The fact that those wrinkles appear has a bad effect on the gene's activity that make it erroneous.
According to their studies, the virus can be modified to deliver lamin (intermediate filament) to human cells. Lamin is a fibrous protein that provides structural and transcriptional functions in the cell nucleus which in turn can soften and smooth cell wrinkles.
6- 3D printing human tissue with capillaries
In June 2018, Prellis Biologics announced that they could print tissues with living human capillaries. Printed tissues can be used for transplantation. This advancement will make it possible to print vital organs and replace them for old, diseased or deformed parts. This will greatly reduce the number of deaths due to the lack of organs for transplantation.
Recently, Israeli scientists have successfully used a 3D bioprinter to create a heart complete with tissue and blood vessels similar to a human heart, not only opening up new prospects for patients who need a heart transplant but for patients in need of other organ transplants.
7- Transgenic
Over the past few years, researchers have made great achievements in the treatment and prevention of diseases by eliminating aging cells or those that have stopped dividing. The scientists used transgenic methods and conducted initial experiments on mice.
In 2018, two independent research groups used transgenic approaches to prevent neurodegeneration. Following those results, scientists from the Mayo Clinic conducted a study on how to remove aging brain cells in patients with Alzheimer's disease, preventing brain degeneration.
Another lab uses transgenic method to destroy old cells in the brains of mice exposed to the herbicide which is a major cause of Parkinson's disease in humans and mice. The results of the study show that this gene therapy gives positive signals in the treatment of Parkinson's disease in mice.
8- Blood transfusion against memory loss
In one experiment, it was found that blood transfusions from young mice to old mice stimulated neurons and stem cells in the brains of old mice. This can completely reverse the effects of the aging process. From here having been appeared a start-up project called Ambrosia which allows patients to pay $8,000 to buy plasma from young people.
Although the results of the trial were not clear and there were many objections to the Ambrosia project, a clinical study was still carried out. The results obtained from this study were surprising. Biomarkers of older people with Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular problems showed significant improvement. Unfortunately, in some patients, however, this effect does not last long.
9- Mental health
Psychological disorders (or mental disorders), including substance abuse, can accelerate the aging process. A study published in August 2018 analyzed more than 60,000 brain scans of people aged 9 months to 105 years. A team of researchers, including scientists from Google and Johns Hopkins University, USA, found that the cause of premature aging is due to:
- Schizophrenia (averagely 4-year reduction in life expectancy)
- Marijuana abuse (2.5 years)
- Bipolar disorder (1.6 years)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (1.4 years)
- Alcohol abuse (0.6 years)
Besides, they also found that depression is not related to accelerated aging.
10- Diet
Scientists have proven that reducing calorie consumption can actually slow down the aging process and reduce the risk of aging-related diseases. A study conducted in 2018 found that the timing and amount of food you eat has anti-aging effects and reduces the risk of diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and dementia. Scientists recommend that you should follow an intermittent fasting regimen.
11- Lifestyle
We hear every day about the benefits of eating right, exercising, and avoiding bad habits. In 2018, it was proven that these things can actually increase life expectancy by 10 years.
A 34-year study found that if people quit smoking, keep their body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9, exercise for 30 minutes a day, reduce alcohol intake and following a healthy diet can extend lifespan by 12 years for men and 14 years for women.
Aging has become a concern for many people. Fortunately, scientists around the world have been working to find ways to reverse aging and increase life expectancy.
However, the most practical way to protect yourself against the aging process is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow a healthy diet. Do not wait for the intervention of science and technology, you yourself can also fight and win reverse aging from now on. Hopefully, above information has provided you with the necessary understanding on How to slow down aging and increase human life expectancy through science and technology.
