An estimated 10,000 Hong Kong travellers  have flocked to Japan in just a week after this country eased travel regulations.

Japan has once again become a popular travel destination for Hongkongers after the country's government on October 11 eased travel regulations related to the Covid-19 epidemic and started accepting individual travellers.

10,000 Hongkongers travel to Japan in just a week

Only 5,900 Hongkongers traveled to Japan in the first eight months of this year, down 99.6% from the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic took place.  But it seems more than 10,000 Hongkongers traveled to Japan in just one week from October 11, according to the estimate by this country’s tourism industry.

Trips to Japan have recovered thanks to changes in policy by the Japanese government and the Hong Kong government.  The Japanese government has lifted the limit of the number of daily entry visitors and started accepting individual travellers again, while the Hong Kong government also eased entry restrictions.

According to Hong Kong-based travel booking site Klook, searches related to Japan have increased 11 times from last week. Popular destinations are Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa.

Japanese food is very popular among Hongkongers and many people have a positive image of Japan through cartoons and other contents.  In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, about 2.29 million Hongkongers, about a third of the entire population, traveled to Japan.
